As they walked in from the sea, the mountains grew taller, and the roads joined an old highway that once ran through those parts. In these times, it was a misty and desolate trail, but with no woods or obstacles it was the easiest to walk for those foolish or desperate enough to take to their feet.

Many were the stops on the highway. Small groups turned into large ones as refugees from destroyed settlements sought safety inland, sharing encampment space, supplies and stories. It was at such a camp where the travelers met Felix and his fighters, whose candles lit their paths forward.

It was Ash who first encountered Felix. Hardly noticing one another, they sat side to side by a wood fire and warmed their hands. When Ash removed their gloves, Felix took hold of their wrist. Against his dark skin was etched a tattoo of the sun. For a moment he looked into Ash's face with an intense stare, then he broke into a smile and the two were intimate friends.

Felix gestured to the small rock hammer on Ash's waist and inquired: "You're from the Academy as well?"

The sledgehammer on his own back spoke to the fighter's own background. If both possessed the same training, then Felix wielded it more confidently and strongly.
