INDIVIDUAL ONE: Hey Tuds, what's up?
INDIVIDUAL TWO: Hey, were you asleep?
INDIVIDUAL ONE: No, I was just- awake. What's going on?
INDIVIDUAL TWO: I was just wondering if you had time to come down today. Chris from VeilSat sent me something big this morning.
INDIVIDUAL ONE: Is this the Titan signal?
INDIVIDUAL TWO: Nah, we're not good enough for that. SETI's all over it. But he sent me some audio from the solar orbiter last night. It’s coming from around the Orion Nebula. They’re calling it the "Spacecat," and it's- weird.
INDIVIDUAL ONE: And they want to use the array?
INDIVIDUAL TWO: Chris wants to use the array. Most of VeilSat is caught up with the Titan stuff, and he can't even get on the orbiter now, so he's coming up from Florida with a VO Refractor. If it works, we should be able to get our Spacecat on the radio dishes and use those to aim the refractor, and that'll at least get more audio out of it, if not an image.
INDIVIDUAL ONE: I super don't want to talk to Chris from VeilSat today. Not like I don’t want to talk to him, I just, you know-
INDIVIDUAL TWO: I'll handle him. I was just hoping you'd take the console.
INDIVIDUAL ONE: Ok. Is anyone else coming?
INDIVIDUAL TWO: Just me today. Vivian's working their actual job and Melody is out of town.
INDIVIDUAL ONE: Gotcha. I can camp out for the day in the office if you give me like- half an hour to get dressed and drive over.
INDIVIDUAL TWO: Okay. After I check the dishes and deal with Chris it’s over to you. I’ve- been up since two this morning so I’m going to put down a towel and close my eyes for a minute.
INDIVIDUAL ONE: Well, bring a blanket. The wind coming off the lake is supposed to be pretty cold today.
INDIVIDUAL TWO: Oh, it is. You bring a hoodie.
INDIVIDUAL ONE: Will do. Let me go throw some pants on, I'll talk to you soon.
INDIVIDUAL TWO: Alright, see you.

INDIVIDUAL ONE: Hey, so there's definitely something in front of the nebula. You can see it in the radio image but it's not picking up on the VO refractor. I'm going to run another image while I go out for lunch, and hopefully we'll have something by the time I get back. Speaking of lunch, I didn't bring anything with me, so I'm going to head over to Melvin's. Would you like to come with me? ----- Yeah, just walk up to the road, I'll pick you up.

Webs

Webs on the false wood grain mask, paper thin
Webs on the glass windowpane full of bugs
Rain on the moss and the leaves from last fall
Rain on the street turns to mist turns to fog
Mesh window screen letting in chilly air
Mesh window screen letting in coyotes' calls
Glow from a lamp burning hot through the night
Glow from fairy lights we put up last year
Every year, a shadow will darken the sky
And every night, a cold wind will find where I lie

Shadows and Lilacs
All the water that they can't hold back
Let me hear the crickets again
Let me hear the AC screaming back at your house
This is where the flowers grow in the spring
This is where the sun sets between the trees
This is where I listen to the summer nights
This is where I walk when I cannot sleep

When the glaciers melted
And the crust ascended
The water poured into the lake
It was doomed to spill its banks
Since the delta flooded
No one has recorded
Who has been to see that place
What we lost beneath the waves
Get in the lake.
Secret
Hidden core
Lonely
Pallid shores

The Shelterwood
05:37
|

The river flows through the forest
Below the old road
Into the culvert
All the crows watch from their branches
The deer in velvet
Shedding all their fur
The forest trails are thick with mud
The water rises up
Around your boots
All the paths that you would normally be on
Are impassable now
While you find another route
Rain starts to fall in the forest
On the river
Into the culvert
The water gathers in the hollows
Full of mosses
By the rusted chain link fence
The heat is broken by the thunder
And all the creatures pick out their shelters
Up on the road there are headlights passing by
It's a shame to turn around
But there's nowhere else to go
Everything that you see here was changed after the flood
New streams that cut through soil
The river banks have moved
This is the same old forest
These are the same old trees
You know your way around here
But something's different now
It's here, between the trees

INDIVIDUAL ONE: Hey, Melody, I know you're- driving right now, but I was hoping you could call me when you get a minute? We are all at- the observatory. Tuds and I are out here crunching some number and - Vivian is - inside working on a - bomb. We are - going to blow up the observatory. We've worked out that that is where our friend is most likely to land on the Earth. We've worked out an arrival time within the next 24 hours but- to actually stand any chance at taking this thing out we need millisecond precision. Maybe even finer. Tuds and I are both completely stumped and this is the kind of thing we thought you might have some insight into - so - as soon as you can give us a call I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

Lambs
05:56
|
|||
Half the tents we once had
The rest are torn up in the breeze
And scattered at our feet
'Round empty firepits
We used up all the deadfall
We burned our extra clothes
And now we're down to what is left for us
The sun sets, but we are warm
We are close around the fire
As darkness closes in
On those who lived and died
We gathered up our courage
And smothered out the embers
And settled down with what is left for us
We are the lambs
Gathered round our ewes
Fighting off our fears
We are the lambs
What is left for us?

It will, it will
Blow the leaves off the summer trees
It will, it will
Make the men fall to their knees
It will, it will
Block the sun and blacken the sky
It will, it will
Drown out every voice and cry
Descended from Orion, a shadow falls over our island
Lonely rider, you will see, it's already here, it's between the trees
It's between the trees
Do you know how to let go?
Let it sink beneath the waves
The forest will stand for another day
